State Golf Day 1 - Monday was a chilly, overcast-rainy day 1 of the 4A State Championship. Senior Mathew Vaver teed off at 10:50 a.m. to wind and rain. Matthew had a consistent round with the exception of a wayward drive and unlucky bounce on hole 9. He finished the front nine 5-over par. He recovered with a birdie on the 10th hole and finished with a 78 for the round on a tough day. This resulted in a 22nd place finish (84 players in the state field) on Day 1. The host school, Montrose HS, had a grill out for all participants, coaches and families Monday evening.
State Golf Day 2 - Tuesday brought calm beautiful fall weather for the field. The course was gorgeous and Matthew got off to a good start at even par through 5 holes. He finished the front nine with a 38. Wanting to making a run, he took a few more chances and played well, but lipped out several putts. He finished Day 2 with another 78 which put Matthew in 25th Place finish at State. It was a great day and Matthew played spectacularly, and a bit unlucky to not finish higher.
It was a great finish to Matthew Vaver's high school golf with a great showing at State. According to Coach Cabrera, "it is a great day and (we) are happy that (Matthew) Vaver gets his victory lap at state." Coach Vu added that "Matthew has been our most consistent golfer for these past 2 years, and though he didn't finish as high as he could with his talent, he is a champion with the way he plays and has led our team this year!"

Fostering continuous improvement within your team culture involves recognizing that it is not static but rather dynamic and adaptable. To achieve this, it's crucial to integrate integrity and feedback into the process. Upholding integrity as a cornerstone value, emphasizing ethical decision-making, promoting transparency and honesty, and creating a robust feedback loop are key components. Additionally, accountability, inclusivity, and diversity should be central to your culture, and your team's values should be regularly revisited and refined. Recognizing and rewarding ethical behavior, providing training in ethics, and consistently assessing your culture are vital steps. This week's practice will primarily revolve around getting ready for the upcoming state championship scheduled for Oct 1st/2nd. Our practice sessions will encompass 9-hole rounds and time at the range, while also providing an opportunity for our state qualifiers to manage their school assignments.
Empowerment in sports teams means giving athletes the authority, responsibility, and resources to make decisions and take ownership of their performance. It's important because it boosts morale, fosters innovation, increases accountability, reduces micromanagement, and improves decision-making. Empowering athletes enhances their motivation and engagement, leading to better overall individual, and team performance and satisfaction.
Our week of preparation for the regionals went quite well. It all kicked off on Monday when we had our final JV tournament at Highland Hills in Greeley. On the same day, our Varsity team engaged in a practice round over at Coal Creek golf course. The focus of attention this week centered around Jameson Love and Cade Falzone, who were competing for the coveted fourth spot on the regional team. Following this round, Jameson Love managed to pull ahead by a margin of four strokes.
As for Tuesday and Wednesday, those were dedicated to practice sessions at Indian Peaks and Coal Creek, respectively. We then concluded our league season on Thursday with our last league match, which took place at Highland Hills GC in Greeley. Congratulations to Matthew V who emerged as the victor of this tournament with a score of 75. Will Thompson secured 10th place with a score of 80, Jaron C claimed the 13th spot with an 82, Cade F shot an 85 (landing in 21st place), and Jameson L finished with an 89 (T26th). Our team, collectively, managed to secure third place with a total score of 322. Following this round, the competition for that fourth reginal team spot remained: tied.
Finally, on Friday, the Varsity team played a practice round at Boomerang Golf Course, which is the designated course for the regionals. Our tee time was 7:50 am, and we started play to an overcast day with the course being in fantastic condition. By the conclusion of the day, we had determined our regional team. Jameson Love, having achieved a day score of 83 and a PlayIN score of 416, managed to surpass Cade F (who had an 85/418) to secure the fourth spot on the regional team.
William Thompson shares: Great season as a team and individually. Everyone improved so much over the season, and it was great to see everyone’s hard work pay off. JV and Dev, don’t get complacent until next season, go put in the work to get to a new level. Don’t forget we still have our final team competition!
Matthew Vaver: Fantastic season everyone! I had a lot of fun throughout and I’m sure everyone else shared the feeling. Varsity team we have work to do at regionals don’t let up as the season comes to an end. Let’s get the team to state.
Belief plays a vital role in sports performance, where athletes' mindset and self-confidence significantly impact their success. It acts as a self-fulfilling prophecy, boosting confidence, resilience, and goal achievement. It also enhances team dynamics, aids in visualization and mental preparation, and helps athletes overcome challenges. Belief is about believing in your potential for continuous improvement. Embracing this belief collectively sets the stage for achieving your goals and exceeding expectations, creating a powerful force for success.

Coaches and team leaders should exemplify the team culture they wish to create. Demonstrating respect, discipline, and dedication will inspire the players to follow suit.
Remember that building a team culture takes time and consistent effort. By instilling these lessons into the golf team's daily practices and interactions, you can create a positive and united culture that enhances performance and overall enjoyment of the sport.

Eat well, sleep well, be well" serves as a guiding principle for athletes and their coaches. Prioritizing physical and mental conditioning through proper nutrition, quality sleep, regular training, fitness programs, and mental preparation not only builds endurance, prevents injuries, and enhances focus but also fosters a well rounded approach to athlete well-being. It's a recipe for success in the world of sports.
Monday we had our weekly team meeting for review and cover this week's event including our host tournament. The boys practiced with our All Around routine.
Tuesday we played our CHS TEAM Cup Event#4. This event was a Foursomes Match that sent teams out in pairs and boys played alternating shot with their teammate for the round. This is an exciting format that focusses on every shot as a player is not in control of the next shot and truly makes golf a team game. We had 3 matches, 2 of which came down to the final hole all square. Match #1 BLUE team (Sophomores Will Berhost & Alex McGibbon/Harrison McGowan) defeated WHITE team (Sophomores Tighe Lynch & Sage Bailey) 2-UP. This match came to hole #16 with Blue holding a 1-up lead after White had won hole #15 with a great approach into the green by Sage. Will B stepped to the Tee and hit a great shot to green setting up a Par to regain the 2 hole lead and closed out match on 17. Match #2 went to the 18th hole All Square between BLUE team (Seniors Jameson Love & Cade Falzone) versus WHITE team (Senior Jaron Casetellanos & Junior Aidan Pulford). White found bunker on the left off the tee and Blue striped a drive into the fairway. With the position advantage Blue was able close and Par the hole on a long putt from Cade to seal a 1-up victory and a point for Blue. Match #3 also went to the 18th hole All Square. BLUE team (Senior Matthew Vaver & Matthew Bezeidenhout) had Par on 17 to tie the match versus (Senior Will Thompson & Sophomore JT Falzone). White's Tee shot went to right rough and Blue's tee shot went left narrowly missing OB fence. White had advantage getting onto green in 3, while Blue lay 4 after some bunker problems. JT lagged a long par putt to about 2 feet perfectly leaving teammate Will T a sure putt for 5 playing the advantage. Blue was 25+ feet away and Matthew Bez stepped up and made an improbable putt center-cut into back of cup to earn a half point as the Match Ended All Square to the applause to teammates, coaches and opponents alike. For the Event which include team total the BLUE team defeated the WHITE team 3.5 pts to 0.5 pts.
Blue Team currently leads competition 12pts to 6 pts through 4 Events. (Click here for details and full scoring)
Wednesday the Team met at the beginning of practice for a special speaker. Santino Castellanos spoke to the Team about FOCUS. Highlights of the talk were review of Team Pledge, time management keeping priorities of Family, School Work, and personal commitments addressed to free mind up for golf without burden of stressors, and knowing that boys have resources in their parents, coaches and Santino himself to talk and be there for them if needed.
Following our speaker presentation, our JV/Dev players practiced the All Around game routine, and coaches met with our Varsity players. We are at the point in the season where we are closing towards the end of League matches (3 remaining) and our competition Ramps UP to Regionals. At Regionals, we are permitted only 4 players, and those spots are earned through season performances and scores to-date being factored into a CHS Regionals PLAY-IN Tournament. Through MERIT, players were presented with their current standings and presented a plan where the last 3 League tournaments, along with 1 or 2 Varsity Practice rounds, will be totaled for scoring and the 4 lowest totals will qualify. As a team, we want to be peaking at the right time leading into Regionals to put our team in the best position to Win a Berth at Regionals to get a TEAM TO STATE. Connect with your varsity players for additional details, and status will be updated in the coming weeks. (The scoring caption above shows Play-in Status and will be updated until players are mathematically set.)
Thursday was our Centaurus hosted League Tournament & Invitational at Indian Peaks. First and foremost, it takes a ton of preparation to host a quality event, and coaches have worked with IP staff through the summer and into the season. We had parents step up in that preparation, and a special thanks goes to Patrick Love, Liana Bezeidenhout, Kristin Vaver, Sally Falzone, Jessie Thompson, Stephanie Haskett. From snacks and drinks, greeting teams and recognizing our Seniors with their Senior Banners; our collective group put on an outstanding tournament with so much positive feedback from opposing coaches, players and spectators. We had our largest tournament ever with over 122 players (don't tell IP as we were limited to 120 :) and had to turn down multiple other requests. The event also serves as a fundraiser for the golf program to allow for more playing opportunity for our boys.
Our Warriors were led in the Varsity tournament with three top-10 finishers; Matthew Vaver 76 (T-7th) and Jaron C and Will T both shooting 78 (t-9th). As a Team, we placed 3rd with a 316 total. Matthew was a single shot out of tie for tournament win. In the JV Invitational, Will Berhost and JT Falzone (personal best) led the way with 87 and 89 respectively. Our developmental team played a scramble format with Tighe, Sage, Alex and Harrison combining to shoot a 2-under par 70 to place T-4th place, with a couple teams electing to have their full JV squads play in scramble format.
Great job to our entire TEAM, and thanks again for ALL that assisted in our tournament effort!!!
Let a round develop, and come to you: Patience is critically important for golfers in both practice and performance. It aids in developing precision, consistency, and composure, making wise course management decisions, and adapting to changing conditions. It also supports long-term skill development and goal achievement, while enhancing the overall enjoyment of the game. Essentially, patience is a fundamental attribute that contributes significantly to a golfer's success and satisfaction on the golf course.
You can not force a round of golf. Like a book, it has a beginning, middle and end, it develops as a unique story, and you are the one writing it: accept, own it, learn from it, and love every round of golf you play as it happened.

Pillars of Team Building
Recognize and celebrate team achievements, both big and small. Equally important, learn from setbacks and losses, using them as opportunities for growth and improvement.
Remember that building a successful sports team environment requires continuous effort and adaptability. Emphasize the importance of teamwork and create an environment that encourages players to bring out their best, both individually and collectively. By following these progressive steps, you can foster a competitive and supportive sports team environment that will lead to increased success on and off the field.
Monday the team had our weekly team meeting to review last week and prepare for this week. For practice we did a TEAM CUP Event #2 that had Short game Skills Challenges. In the first event we repeated our golf tryout routine using Coach C's Challenge format. The teams divided up and each member performed shots that are typical during every round that were scored based on result. The BLUE team won the Coach C's Challenge earning them 1 team point. In the second challenge, each player performed individually for their respective teams in Coach Vu's Short Game Shootout where players were eliminated based on shots around the practice chipping green. Seniors Jaron Castellanos and Cade Falzone made it to the final Shootout shot from off the green. Cade placed a shot to within 2 feet of the hole, but was bested by Jaron's shot the rolled inside of Cade's to about 1 foot to win and earn the White team 1 point.
Tuesday was League Tournament #5 at Twin Peaks GC in Longmont. It was another hot golf day and our Warriors were led by Senior Matthew Vaver who posted a 3-over 73 for a 2nd place finish just 1 shot back. "Matthew showed his mental toughness coming back from triple on hole 13 to close the final 5 holes in 1-under par in a tremendous display golf scrambling ability" according to Coach Vu. As a team our Warriors placed 5th place in varsity competition, with Senior Jameson Love (81) and Cade (82) contributing solid rounds. The JV squad was lead by Sophomore Will Berhost who carded a personal best of 82 to earn a 2nd place individual finish in the JV/Dev tournament division and lead the team to a 2nd place tournament finish. Coach Vu stated that it "was great to see WillB post a score that rewards the hard work he has putting into his all-around game" and Coach Cabrera indicated that JV and Varsity all played from the same extended tees and Will placed T-3rd overall on our team scores.
Wednesday we started our Large Bucket practice routine and all boys completed during practice at Indian Peaks.
Thursday marked our first full squad TEAM CUP competition (Event#3) that paired boys in head-to-head stroke play versus an opposing team player based on team rank. BLUE team prevailed over White team by a score of 5 pts to 4 pts. Winners in the event included BLUE team members Matthew Vaver, Cade, Freshman Matthew Bezeidenhout; and White team members Senior Will Thompson, Junior Aidan Pulford, Sophomore Sage Bailey. Sophomores Alex McGibbon and Tighe Lynch tied their match.
Blue Team currently leads competition 8.5 to 5.5 pts through 3 Events. (Click here for details and full scoring)
Captain Matthew V: "Hey guys great week. It was a bit of a rough tournament for the team at twin peaks but keep on practicing and let’s come out ready for our home tournament at Indian Peaks."
Captain Will T: "Not our best week, but definitely a learning experience. Don’t give on rounds, every shot matters to your score and the team score, but even though it might seem like it doesn’t. Let’s go defend our home turf at Indian peaks."
As you may know, this week we have the pleasure of hosting the Leagues tournament. Our League/Invite event is unique in that we invite teams to bring all their players, including JV and Develop, mental teams. We offer coaches the option of their teams, especially new players to the sport to play a scramble, or in the case of more experienced players, a stroke play match. This year, we expect to have 90+ golfers.
Several parents have offered help on this day, and I'll take it. I would love help organizing and providing for our guest athletes snacks and drinks. We would place them at the turn where players can replenish. Idealy, we would offer healthy options.
PS - Everyone plays from our team.
For our practice this week, our attention will be placed on FOCUS, and achieving a state of 'Relaxed Concentration', where time does not exist, shots just happen, and perfection is not an expectation, where you are just playing golf without a worry in your mind.
To achieve focus in the game of golf, develop a pre-shot routine, concentrate on one shot at a time, use deep breathing for relaxation, practice mindfulness, and employ positive self-talk. At the driving range, have a structured practice plan, set goals, visualize shots, simulate game conditions, practice various shot types, seek feedback, and manage practice time effectively. Consistent practice of these strategies will enhance your ability to maintain focus and improve your golf performance.

Monday marked the halfway point of our league season with a League Tournament #4 @ Ute Creek GC hosted by Silver Creek HS. This was a varsity only tournament and Centaurus was led by Senior Will Thompson who led the tournament for most of the day and finished with a 76 to tie for 4th place. Senior Matthew Vaver shot a solid round of 79, t-12th place. As a team the varsity posted a total score of 324, 4th place finish. JV and developmental players practiced at Indian Peaks with Coach Cabrera and began our week's practice focus "Breaking 80". Tuesday was a full squad practice with all players participating in Breaking 80 routine.
Wednesday was the start of our season-long Intra-Squad CHS Team Cup competition. Players were divided based on rankings into two teams, Blue Team which is led by Senior Captain Matthew Vaver and White Team which is led by Senior Captain Will Thompson. CHS Team Cup has six events modeled from Ryder Cup and our Centaurus team building challenges. This week's first event was a 4-Ball match played by the top 4 players on each team not including Captains. The captains led their teams in a coaching capacity and teams played as a group. The Blue Team (James Love, Cade Falzone, Matthew Bezuidenhout, Will Berhost) defeated White Team (Jaron Castellanos, Aidan Pulford, JT Falzone, Tighe Lynch) in the team competition to earn 1 pt. The 4-ball match between Jaron/Aidan vs Jameson/Cade was halved with each team shooting a 9-hole score of 37 earning each team .5 pt. The 2nd 4-ball match of the day saw Blue Team (Matthew Bez/Will B) defeat White Team (JT/Tighe) by a score of 41 to 44.
Blue Team currently leads competition 2.5 to .5 pts. (Click here for details and full scoring)
Thursday practice, we met to review our Team Cup results, and players shared thoughts on the play. Coaches provided feedback for learning to compete and avoid blow-up holes that can affect a round. We continued our Break 80 practice routine, and from the beginning of the week to end, players at all levels were able to complete routine in a little over an hour compared to not finishing at all during practice to start the week.

For our practices this week, we will focus on paying attention to Detail, because paying attention to the little things during practice, when there is no pressure, will improve your chances of success during a tournament, when there is pressure and things matter the most.
This week, we will follow the Large Bucket Routine. Once you complete it, you can practice as you want, as long as you pay attention to detail.

To establish a supportive team environment, it's crucial to foster an atmosphere of encouragement and assistance among team members. This involves creating a culture where seeking advice and help from colleagues is not only accepted but encouraged. Such an environment nurtures camaraderie, as every team member feels valued and connected.
Central to this is cultivating a culture of empathy and active listening. When team members know their opinions are respected, trust naturally grows. This trust forms the foundation of a productive team dynamic. Regular interactions and informal discussions promote the sharing of ideas and expertise, further enhancing this bond.
The benefits of this approach are significant. Teammates are more inclined to explore new ideas and embrace challenges when they have a supportive network. Collaboration becomes a catalyst for personal and collective growth, leading to innovative solutions and improved performance.
Ultimately, creating a supportive team environment is an ongoing commitment that transcends guidelines. By fostering a culture of support and camaraderie, teams can unleash their full potential. Each member feels empowered, valued, and motivated to contribute their best, resulting in a thriving atmosphere of excellence.
"Another Great Week as the 2023 Boys Golf Team Build continues!" - Coach Vu
Monday marked first full team practice at Indian Peaks. Our practices focus on 3 areas at the course: Putting Green, Chipping Green, Driving Range. Our team revolves from stations and gets specific work in groups. Tuesday Team practice was a Tee Time playing round on course at Indian Peaks. These are our intra-squad tournaments that provides opportunities for all players to compete, learn, and earn their spots for tournaments. We score all practice rounds and it adds to players' season averages. Intra-squad competition is essential in team building and we will be evolving that competition throughout the season.

Head Coach Ricardo Cabrera is quoted addressing the team with:
"This week has been the BEST in the history of our team. Let's take a moment to look back and celebrate this achievement, and make sure to share the joy with your friends and family.
Here are a few noteworthy highlights for the week:
1. *Outstanding Team Performance:*
- Varsity Team Finish: Secured an impressive 2nd place.
- JV Team Finish: Achieved an outstanding 2nd place as well.
2. *Remarkable Personal and Season Achievements: This week practically everyone set a personal and/or season bests, including:
- Matthew V, Jaron C, Jameson L, Will T, Aidan P, Cade F, Will B, Matthew B, Harrison, Alex M, Sage B.
It's a testament to the dedication, hard work, and camaraderie of our team that we've achieved such remarkable results. Take pride in your individual and collective achievements, and don't hesitate to spread the word about this momentous week of triumph!"
"This week really showed what the team is capable of. Everyone put up great rounds, and the team earned great finishes in Varsity and JV. We showed resilience, bouncing back from a difficult round and setting a few personal records along the way. As school is starting, make sure to communicate with your teachers and stay up to date on your work. It’s really easy to get behind and difficult to catch back up. Keep up the hard work!"
Captain Matthew V:
"It was a great week of golf! We showed lots of spirit and determination. Following a rough day at Boomerang with a great day at Coyote Creek. Winning on your own is fun, but winning as a team is far better. Keep on working and hard and learn from coaches/teammates."

Our practices will focus this week on 'Practicing with a Purpose". In other words, we must practice as we will play them on a tournament, where every swing counts. Whether it is a putt, chip, iron or wood, we must plan it, review it and adjust for our next swing.
For this week, we will run through the Break 80 routine every day. Once complete, you can free practice - as long as you are doing it with a purpose.

Special Guest Santino Castellanos talks about: Focus
Sportsmanship is essential for golf team members to create a positive team dynamic, invite elevated performances, and enhance the overall experience.
It involves demonstrating respect towards teammates, opponents, and officials, accepting outcomes gracefully, and abiding by the rules with honesty and integrity. Supporting and encouraging teammates, embracing diversity and inclusion, and being mindful of behavior are also crucial aspects of fostering sportsmanship.
By prioritizing these values, golf team members not only achieve success on the course but also develop lifelong character traits that extend beyond the sport, becoming positive ambassadors for future athletes.
What a terrific way to start the season! We hosted tryouts on Monday & Tuesday that were competitive and pressured athletes to earn a spot on our final team roster. Final determinations based on merit allowed Coaches to announce a team of 13 Student-athletes at our Parents Night meeting at Indian Peaks on Wednesday.
5 Seniors: Matthew Vaver, Will Thompson, Jameson Love, Jaron Castellanos, Cade Falzone
1 Junior: Aidan Pulford
6 Sophomores: Will Berhost, JT Falzone, Tighe Lynch, Sage Bailey, Alex McGibbon, Harrison McGowan

CONGRATULATIONS: Coach Ricardo announced Team Captains Matthew Vaver & Will Thompson before the round (more to come for their profile in future update section)
We celebrate all boys that competed, 5 Varsity and 4 JV players. Leading the team on the course for Varsity team were Top-10 finishes by Jaron C. (75, 4th) & Matthew V. (78, T-7th). Our Team finished in 4th Place with a total score 323. Outstanding performances for first tournament out but the exciting piece is that neither are satisfied with that result. For all varsity players a baseline for the season has been set and improvement is going to be exciting to watch. For the JV team, Aidan Pulford (91) led the way, Freshman Matthew B. posted a 94 is his first HS tournament. As a team JV Placed 4th (280) for an exciting start for that group with so much potential. Parents and Students
Make a plan for our golf season. Get ahead of assignments, tests, and any school work. If you are getting behind in school, talk to coaches and teachers. Make a transportation plan, meet other parents, and work out carpools.
Communicate with teachers
We will put together a practice and tournament schedule handout to share with teachers. When school starts, take time to share this with them and work a school plan so you are always ahead in school. Have them give you tests and assignments in advance, and get them done!Remember, coaches are here to help, and we can help here too :)

*Teams are fluid, and change according to scoring averages after every league, invite, or team outing. ALL SCORES COUNT, ALL THE TIME!
Before a competitive round, do you spend time:
a) Worrying about what could go wrong
b) Visualizing yourself playing good shots
While warming up do you work on:
a) Refining your technique, hitting lots of shots with the same club
b) Getting a simple swing feel, then playing a variety of shots with full routine
On the first tee are you focused on:
a) What others will think of you if you hit a bad shot
b) Trusting your swing feel and making a committed swing
On the opening holes if you get off to a good start, do you:
a) Start thinking about the possibility of shooting your career score
b) Simply stay in the present and focus on playing each shot the best you can
If you get off to a poor start, do you:
a) Panic and start analyzing your swing, trying to “fix it”
b) Slow down and check your set-up, tempo, and mental focus to see what’s getting in the way of playing better
Midway through the round if you have been playing well, do you:
a) Worry about when the wheels will come off, tighten up, and get more careful and tentative
b) Attend to your energy level (water & food) and your tempo, focused on keeping the same rhythm and attitude that has been working well
If you have been playing poorly, do you:
a) Decide it’s not your day and start playing with a negative attitude with anger, carelessness, excuses, complaints, and even look for the drink cart to drown your sorrows
b) Accept that your ball-striking is not at its best, and take the opportunity to work on your recovery shots and short game
Near the end of the round if you have been playing well, do you:
a) Play defensively, trying to not make a mistake and get done without losing many strokes
b) Stay focused on the shot at hand rather than getting ahead of yourself, and keep playing to make your lowest score on each hole without taking an unnecessary risk
After the round do you:
a) Focus on what went wrong, speak negatively about your game, and complain about the conditions
b) Reflect on what went well, and reinforce what you did that led to your success, and make a plan to work on the parts of your game that have room for improvement.
The more questions you answered with choice b), the more you can rely on your mental game to help you play your best.
Any questions you answered with choice a), indicate areas of your mental game that need improvement.

Thank you, everyone, for your participation in our Summer League. Witnessing students and new golfers come together to play, learn, forge new connections, and relish this sport has been truly gratifying. Additionally, it brings coaches great joy to observe the steady improvement in the level of golf displayed every year. This program has been instrumental in elevating the status of golf at Centaurus High School, and we couldn't be prouder of its accomplishments.
Our Final Summer league week was a new event this summer as we incorporated inviting previous coaches and golf team members to join in our final summer league round of golf. Besides some fun stories he has a number of things he’s learned about the game and life. He also discusses his instruction of Tiger which is fun." - Coach Bill.
