"It is a fine irony that after the completion of a project or grand enterprise, there is still much to do. Completion is merely a pause in the cycle of creation and decay—a momentary still point for the swinging pendulum of life. Though completion implies a period of restful pause—one that has been well earned—it is not an actual ending; it is a harmonious flat spot in the constancy of change and movement, like the still point between the inhalation and exhalation of one’s breath." - excerpt from I Ching 63
A great fun event - thank you to the parents that joined the game. Lest do it again!

This was my first quote (from our closing ceremony):
“In the battle of life it is not the critic who counts; not the one who points out how the strong stumbled or where the doer of a deed could have done better. The credit belongs to those who are actually in the arena; whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs and comes short again and again, because there is not effort without error and shortcoming; who does actually strive to do the deeds; who knows great enthusiasm, the great devotion, spend themselves in a worth cause; who at best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at worst, if they fail, at least failed while daring greatly, so that their place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who have tasted neither victory nor defeat.” - President Theodore Roosevelt
Experience
“Experience is what you get when you don’t get what you want.” Unknown
Attitude
“The ancestor to every action is a thought.” - Wayne Dyer
“The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of ATTITUDE on life. Attitude, to me, is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than successes, than what other people think or say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness or skill. It will make or break a company... a church... a home. The remarkable thing is that we have a choice everyday regarding the ATTITUDE we will embrace for that day. We cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our ATTITUDE.” - Unknown
One of the sayings last night is at the end of this:
Success
“The first step in becoming successful is getting outa bed in the morning.” - Glen Gabbard
“I’ve learned to spar or dance with fame and success, but never to embrace it.” - Robert Redford, Actor
“You can achieve almost anything you wish in life. You only have to determine what price you have to pay and be willing to pay it.” - H. L. Hunt, Oil Baron and father of Lamar Hunt
“You can use most any measure when you’re speaking of success. You can measure it in fancy homes, expensive car or dress. But the measure of your real success is the one you cannot spend. It’s the way your kids describe you when they are talking to a friend.” Anonymous
Integrity
“Always remember Integrity is a helluva lot more in demand than intelligence, and you’ll be OK.” - Harold Hunter, and old friend
Your personal integrity is THE most vital and important part of you and your greatest prize. Not to discount intelligence, but many with high intelligence have stumbled and self-destructed because they gave up their integrity, usually thinking they could barely “push” the limits or “live on the edge”. Your integrity is also one of the toughest qualities to maintain, especially as you become more successful. The temptation to slightly bend the rules or cross over (just once?) to make more money, or satisfy your ego (sex, more power, more attractive and expensive “things” in your life) is a seductive and slippery slope. Once you have “crossed that line”, it may be tough to return to the original person you were and repair that damage. When you make a mistake, the one thing you can do is admit it and apologize...immediately. You will find the longer you wait, the deeper you sink into your own hell. This is true in all aspects of your life, but especially with a spouse, partner, co-worker, or anyone with whom you LOVE or have built TRUST.
"Reputation and Character are different. You can’t control 100 different (from people) reputations you may have, but you can control your character and integrity." - Bill Holmes
"The supreme quality for leadership is unquestionably integrity. Without it, no real success is possible, no matter whether it is on a section gang, a football field, in an army, or in an office." - Dwight D. Eisenhower, 34th U.S. President and Commanding General of Victorious U.S. Forces in World War II.
Other sayings that I’m giving to my grandson:
“Bullfight critics ranked in rows crowd the plaza full. But there is only ONE who knows, and he’s the one who fights the bull.” Anonymous
“Natural champions are at ease with - even crave for - the loneliness of high places. The man or woman who insists on being one of the crowd will never be anything else.” Rex Bellamy, The London Times
“Some of my fondest memories in sport were the result of failures, injuries, setbacks or mistakes. I learned far more about myself and gained more character in those difficult times than I ever did when success came easily.” - Peter Vidmar, Olympic Gold Medalist - Gymnast
Saturday Practice Round at Pelican Lakes in Windsor was a fun day. The team played a round of golf with the intention of learning the course, practicing shots from around the course, green and putting to prepare for the state rounds starting on Monday. We played 16 holes of golf before we were hammered by a rain, when we unanimously decided to head for the clubhouse and finish our day.
Monday Day 1 - Our day started on the colder side, and the team teed off back to back, starting at 9am. By the end of the day, our team was in 11th place with a score of 250. Individually: Asa W (79), Matthew V (79), William T (91), Jameson L (93).
On Tuesday Day 2 - Tee times were set by leader board scoring, placing our Tee times at 9:10, 9:30, 10:50, and 11:00. With a cumulative sore of 504, our team finished in 12th place. Individually: Asa W (161), Matthew V (162), William T (179), and Jameson L (183).
Coaches Notes: We are proud of this team. With one Senior player and three Juniors, this team took on a difficult challenge. For two rounds of golf, they learned firsthand what it's like to play on a highly competitive field, and what to expect for next year. They represented Centaurus High School admirably. Well done!

Last week, our practice and preparation focused on the Regional Tournament. We met on Monday September 19th and played two rounds of golf. Starting at Buffalo Run and finishing the day at Riverdale Knolls, the site of the regional course. On Tuesday, the team met at Indian Peaks and held a light practice in preparation for the regional tournament on Wednesday.
Wednesday September 21st was a cold and rainy day. Jameson L started our rounds of golf at 11:47 am, followed by William T, Asa W, and Matthew V. Our round progressed (as the weather deteriorated), and our team put together its best round of the year, landing in second place and qualifying as a team to the State Championship with a score of 223. Individually: Asa W (70/1st), Jameson L (76/T-7th), William T (77/T-11th), Matthew V (83/28th). Both Asa W and Jameson L scored a season low, and personal best scores. Asa's score of 1-under 70 is the lowest round recorded for a Centaurus player in a tournament, a school record.
On a personal note, this team is the hardest working group I've coached. Led by our captain Asa W, they showed integrity and sportsmanship, and their performance Wednesday showed courage and resilience - so proud of you all! (PS - a special mention to Coach Vu for all the intangibles he brings to this team).
Looking forward, we turn our focus to the State championship, and start preparations to maintain focus and skills up to par (no pun intended), with a new goal of a State medal - we are not done yet!
Teams Captain Asa W. says, "This season has been a team effort all the way. I was proud of the work we all put in to get the whole squad to state. Seeing our hard work pay off in regionals gives us a boost of confidence heading into state as a team."

When you step onto the first tee, do you have the right attitude so you can keep relaxed and concentrated to play your best golf?
With the right attitude, you will play to your potential. Develop self trust and patience, commit to your intentions and accept what comes. Expect less, get more, invite calmness, acceptance and responsibility.
After a round, ask yourself: How was your attitude, where can you improve it, did you keep your intentions and let go of your expectations?, Did you try too hard?
This week was officially our last week of full practice. It was a busy week as our focus turns towards our regional match next week.
On Monday, we held a regular practice and prepared ourselves for our last league/invite match on Tuesday. This league tournament took place at Indian Peaks, our home course.
Tuesday We played a 9am shotgun at Indian Peaks, and our team came in fourth place (by one stroke) with a total score of 320. Individually Matthew V (77/T-7th), Asa W (78/8th), Jameson L (82/13th), Will T (83/T-14th), and Jaron C (88/T-25th). This last league match competed our PlayIN competition, which selected our regional team. On this same day, our JV/Dev teams also participated in their last tournament of the year. Notable scores came from William B (89), and Alex M (93) scoring their personal best.
On Wednesday, we held our last official practice with the whole team. It was a fun day where we played 9 holes of golf. No practice held of Thursday.
Friday, our Regional team played our first regional practice round at Pelican Lakes in Windsor, which is the site for the State tournament. Matthew and Asa both posted strong rounds of 77 in prep for Regionals.

Last week, we had a short week due to our Labor Day holiday weekend. We held practice on Tuesday.
Wednesday, the Varsity team played a League match at Highland Hills GC in Greeley and the JV/Dev played a practice round at Walnut Creek Preserve Golf Course. All scores counted towards our internal PlayIN tournament, that will ultimately select our four regional players and first alternate. This was a memorable day, as half of our competitors scored their best round of the year, while the other half scored their worst. It was an intense and emotional day, and a great learning day for all. As a team, we discussed the emotions of the day and how we need to use what we learned to be better tournament golfers.
On this day, the Varsity team landed in 4th place with a score of 335 and individual performances as follows: Matthew V (80/T-10th), Asa W (81/13th), William T (85/T-18th), Jameson L (89/T-24th), Jaron C (95/T-27th). JV/Dev notables scoring personal bests: Cade F (82), William B (92), Tighe L (95), Alex M (103).
Finally, on Thursday, we practiced as usual and finished the day playing a few holes of golf at Indian Peaks.

"I have missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I have lost almost 300 games. On 26 occasions ,I have been entrusted to take the game-winning shot, and missed. And I have failed over and over and over again in my life. And this is precisely why I succeed"
- Michael Jordan.
What a Week! We were able to get our entire team out into competition at two events. Monday was a practice day and we continued with our work using our golf Launch monitor to provide feedback to boys to know the clubs and distances they can use for tournament play.
Tuesday we had our 6th League Varsity tournament at Ute Creek GC in Longmont. We had JV/Dev players play the same course with notable rounds in that group were season best rounds by Sophomore Aidan Pullford (90), Freshman Tighe Lynch (106). In the Varsity competition, we placed 3rd (315 team total). Leading the way was Junior Matthew Vaver (74, t- 3rd place), Senior Hudson Ferguson (77, t-11th), and Senior Asa Wentworth (81, t-17th). Coaches feel it was especially rewarding to see Hudson shoot his best-ever round in a Varsity tournament. He has worked hard on his game improving every week and played a consistent round highlighted by a pair of birdies, one on each of the nines. Matthew shot his 3rd consecutive round of 74, showing he is Mr. Consistency for our team.
Wednesday we divided practice into two groups to prepare for our Intra-squad tournament on Thursday. Groups were led by Red Team Captain Asa W. and Blue Team Captain Matthew V. Teams were put together based on current scoring averages to play a Ryder Cup style team competition. With odd number of players, coaches were involved and played as well.
Thursday we played an Intra-squad Team Tournament at Riverdale Knolls GC, in part to give Varsity Boys an opportunity to see the course that will host our Regionals tournament this year. RED TEAM (Asa, Coaches, Jameson, Hudson, Alex, Tighe) defeated the BLUE TEAM (Matthew, Will T., Jaron, Cade, Will B., Harrison) by a score of 8 pts. to 2 pts. (Full Scoring Recap link). It was a fun event highlighted by a match between the Captains that went to the 18th hole tied in overall strokes. Asa parred the last hole to win by 1 stroke over Matthew, but both shot amazing rounds of 73 & 74 respectively. The 73 was a season and tournament best round for Asa, and Matthew's 74 makes him "Mr. Consistently LOW" by Coach Vu. Developmental players Will Berhost (94), Alex McGibbon (96), Harrison McGowan (106) shot their season best rounds. Coaches had dinner with the boys who were able to stay at the clubhouse after the tournament.

Discipline 4
Watch your thoughts, because they become words. Your words become actions. Your actions become habits. Your habits become character. Your character becomes your destiny.
-Lao Tze.
Be impeccable with your words - because the words become actions.
Don't take anything personal - because you can't control others.
Minimize thinking about the Past - because you can't change that.
Don't make any assumptions - because we don't know - ask questions.
Always do your best - because to be the best, you have to do your best.
Break old habits - because it's the only way to create change.
This being the first week of school, we had a relatively easy week. We practiced every day and had one tournament in the schedule. Wednesday brought out our range finder, and measured every players swing to 130, 180, 220 yards, and driver distances. The goal was to learn exactly what club to use for this distance. Thursday we played five holes (in the rain).
Tuesday we played our fifth league match at Twin Peaks Golf Course. Our team scored 320, and landed in third place. Individually Matthew V (74/T-3rd), Asa W (75/6th), Will T (81/T-10th), Cade F (90/27th), and Jameson L (91/T-28th). On that same day, the JV/Dev played a practice round, with notable rounds Jaron C (79), Hudson F (84) and William B (100).

Expecting to hit a perfect shot every time you swing the club is not sustainable - invites tension. Striving for consistency and a sound swing is sustainable - invites success. Knowing that you can get out of any situation, and still make par, will free your mind and shed tension. Use your imagination - it's your best friend!
If you are one of those players that don't like it when you hit anything but a perfect shot, watch Bob Newhart's 'STOP IT' video.
Monday our Varsity team played our fourth league tournament. It was our teams best showing so far. As a team, we landed in third place (by four strokes). Individually, our performance included several personal bests: Matthew V (74/6th), Asa W (75/9th), Will T (76/10th), Jameson L (78/15th), Jaron C (84/22nd). Development team had a practice day. We reviewed the rules of golf, and played five holes of golf - in the rain!
Tuesday: We had a rain day, and used it as an opportunity to have a classroom day. Rick Uhlir, Indian Peaks golf pro, Sr European Tour player, Sr. US Open qualifier (twice), and 30+ year Boulder HS Golf Coach took the time to share his take on the game (take a look below). We followed this by watching Ben Hogans' documentary, and finished with a thirty minute putting session.
Wednesday, Coach Bill stopped by, and shared his putting experience. How to putt for success. We finished with practicing our 80 yards in game: putting, chipping and driving range.
Thursday: In preparation for our Twin Peaks league and TT for next week, our focus here was to practice our short game.
Putt to 17 in past the hole (you can birdie if you don't do this). Every 20ft put is a makeable putt.
Anything more than 8 iron, aim to the middle of the green. Anything less than an 8 iron, 5% rule.
Off the fairway, don't risk a double (or triple), get back in play, take your medicine, and move on. You can make up a bogey with a birdie, you can't make up a double with a birdie.
On the Tee Box: Play the club you are comfortable with - most important, put it on the fairway - bomb it or don't bomb it - put it on the fairway.
Don't think about it:
If you had a blow up hole - don't think about it!
If you're playing well, don't think about it!
Your score for the day - don't think about it!
Don't give up a 66 for a 72
Practice Routines
Pull back puts that don't go past 17 in.
80 yards in - 5% (4 yards)
Chipping to 3 ft. - improve your up and down percentage.
Play from the reds until you get a birdie, then move back to the whites, blues, and tips accordingly.

Before a competitive round, do you spend time:
a) Worrying about what could go wrong
b) Visualizing yourself playing good shots
While warming up do you work on:
a) Refining your technique, hitting lots of shots with the same club
b) Getting a simple swing feel, then playing a variety of shots with full routine
On the first tee are you focused on:
a) What others will think of you if you hit a bad shot
b) Trusting your swing feel and making a committed swing
On the opening holes if you get off to a good start, do you:
a) Start thinking about the possibility of shooting your career score
b) Simply stay in the present and focus on playing each shot the best you can
If you get off to a poor start, do you:
a) Panic and start analyzing your swing, trying to “fix it”
b) Slow down and check your set-up, tempo, and mental focus to see what’s getting in the way of playing better
Midway through the round if you have been playing well, do you:
a) Worry about when the wheels will come off, tighten up, and get more careful and tentative
b) Attend to your energy level (water & food) and your tempo, focused on keeping the same rhythm and attitude that has been working well
If you have been playing poorly, do you:
a) Decide it’s not your day and start playing with a negative attitude with anger, carelessness, excuses, complaints, and even look for the drink cart to drown your sorrows
b) Accept that your ball-striking is not at its best, and take the opportunity to work on your recovery shots and short game
Near the end of the round if you have been playing well, do you:
a) Play defensively, trying to not make a mistake and get done without losing many strokes
b) Stay focused on the shot at hand rather than getting ahead of yourself, and keep playing to make your lowest score on each hole without taking an unnecessary risk
After the round do you:
a) Focus on what went wrong, speak negatively about your game, and complain about the conditions
b) Reflect on what went well, and reinforce what you did that led to your success, and make a plan to work on the parts of your game that have room for improvement.
The more questions you answered with choice b), the more you can rely on your mental game to help you play your best.
Any questions you answered with choice a), indicate areas of your mental game that need improvement.

Being the best at what you do is putting 100% effort, taking failure in stride, remaining optimistic, not giving up, and learning from others.
Being the best at what you do is being knowledgeable about your craft, like knowing the rules of golf and how to apply them, knowing other golf related things like how to be a teammate, coach or captain, sports psychology, fitness and nutrition. Preparing for tournaments the day before you compete. Practicing with a purpose and on the weekends, having a plan for improvement, and short term goals that take you closer to your longer term goals.
Being the best at what you do is keeping your chin up when you feel down or when nothing is working, being helpful and respectful to your friends and family, teammates and coaches at all times, and communicating effectively.
Do this, and you will be on the top 10% of whatever you do - this is the result that comes with being the best at what you do.
On Monday and Tuesday, we held regular practices. Wednesday, Coach Vu worked with the Developmental group. Today we worked on routine for warm-ups, routine for putts, and slowing down while practicing on the range. We played simulated 4 holes from Range-to-Chipping-to-Putting Green. Played a Par3, Par5, and two Par4s. Focused on shots, not score. Boys scored each other, and we talked about how 1 bad shot doesn't take you out of a hole. Young Boys listened and practiced well.
Wednesday and Thursday, we competed at Highland Hills in Greeley and Pelican Lakes in Windsor respectively, where the team came in third place in both cases. Individually, Varsity athletes landed as follows ( respectively:) Asa W (79/6th | 82/11th), Will T (83/11th | 84/14th), Jaron C ( 85/13th | 82/11th), Matthew V ( 85/13th | 84/14th), Jameson L ( 88/22nd| 85/18th).
After three league matches, it is evident that level of golf has gone up a notch since last year, and the race for the top four varsity squad is tight and exciting. I can't wait to see how this team evolves.

Playing golf is not about hitting it hard or hitting it far - it's about hitting consistently, mostly straight, and knowing you are never out of the hole. One of my favorite Walter Hagen's famous sayings: "Now what you have to understand is that three bad shots and one good shot still make par. You see, golf is the game of recovery."
Playing golf is about reacting appropriately in every situation. It's about course management, process, patience and perseverance: Always play smart golf.
Ultimately, having a plan will be your best friend: Make a plan for the driving range, before taking a swing, an upcoming tournament, a meeting with your teacher, or even before you make a phone call: Make a plan - all it takes is 30 seconds.

Parents and Students
Make a plan for our golf season. Get ahead of assignments, tests, and any school work. If you are getting behind in school, talk to coaches and teachers. Make a transportation plan, meet other parents, and work out carpools.
Communicate with teachers
We will put together a practice and tournament schedule handout to share with teachers. When school starts, take time to share this with them and work a school plan so you are always ahead in school. Have them give you tests and assignments in advance, and get them done!

The Summer Golf League is intended to get students involved, meet each other and better prepare for the upcoming CHS Golf Season.
We will be playing Youth On Course (YOC) member golf courses. If you don't have this pass yet, CHS will sponsor this membership for you. Let me know so I can arrange your subscription.
To start our series, we have reservations at TopGolf, on Thursday June 23rd from 10-12 am.
If you are a proficient player (score in the 90's, or better) you'll play stroke or match play rounds.
If you have played and are still learning the game (scores 100 to 125) you'll play a scramble with other players of similar skill.
If you have never played, or can hit the ball 150+ yards consistently, or feel you are not ready for this competitive golf league, I recommend you use the YOC Plass to find golf, take private lessons, practice and play, so you can improve your skills and join us later in the summer.
Arrive 1 hr before tee times - so you can stretch, warm-up, and be ready for our pre-game meeting, and arrive to the 1st tee box 10 mins before tee time.
Everyone walks - Push carts OK - In preparation for our League Games, everyone walks - unless there is a medical reason
Scoring: You must count all our strokes - including penalties - and register an honest score.
Track your game - Enter your score on the GHIN app (free with YOC), or other apps so you can set a handicap for yourself. If you have not done so yet, you can enter scores from rounds you've played recently.
Student players will be responsible for all fees. We will be playing YOC courses, so you only pay $5 per round.
We will be playing on Thursday mornings starting June 23rd and ending the week before CHS Boys Golf Team tryouts.
You are responsible for your own transportation - getting there and back. If you cannot drive, I encourage you to coordinate and carpool with other parents/students.
CALENDAR CONFIMRATION: You will receive a calendar reminder for every outing one week before the event. Confirm your attendance in the calendar event one week before our round to guarantee your spot.
Take a look at the calendar, so you can see where and when we will be playing.
Please add yourself to this WhatsApp group, as we will use this for communication.

Besides some fun stories he has a number of things he’s learned about the game and life. He also discusses his instruction of Tiger which is fun." - Coach Bill.
