Please contact Head Coach William Kipp for 2024-25 Golf Season information.
This week we focused winding down our season as well as preparing Asa, our state player, sharp for our upcoming tournament this week. On Monday, we practiced and played with our new toy - a launch monitor - and spent some time learning from it. Tuesday we played our annual 'Beat The Coach' tournament: Team. Matthew V, Jameson L and Cade F secured first place with a seven under round. Team Asa A, Will K and Jeffrey S came in second with a six uner effort. The Coaches scored an even round for a distant third. Congratulations to all. Wednesday there was no official practice help, though Asa W and Matthew V ventured out on their own and played a round of golf at Flatirons GC. Thursday Asa W and Coach Ricardo played at Thorncreek GC. We will play one final practice round Saturday at the state tournament course City Park and will focus on becoming familiar with it and preparing our our final event.

In order to achieve our goals we take small steps towards them - they are usually met in small increments.
When setting your goals, make sure they are reasonable and measurable - Reasonable goals set you up for success and measurable goals let you know how close you are there and most importantly when you achieve them. Measure, review and redefine your goals every year.
This week the team reached it's pinnacle event, competing in the Region 3 competition at Highland Hills GC in Greeley, CO. The team consisted of Asa, Matthew, Jeffery and Jamison. Asa and Matthew were each competing in their second regional competition while Jeffery and Jamison each were competing in their first regional event.
Asa led the team with a 76, fishing in 6th overall and qualifying for the 4A state competition on October 4th & 5th. Matthew finished second on the team shooting an 82. Unfortunately due to the different qualification mechanisms, Matthew went from qualifying for the state championship due to finishing as the first alternate for Region 3. We are hopeful that he may still be able to slide into the final 4A state field.
Our two regional rookies shot an 87 (Jeffery) and 98 (Jamison) respectfully. Despite two of their higher scores of the season, both competed well and took a lot of positive experience away from the event. Experience sure to pay off for both of them in competitions for years to come. As a team Centaurus finished 6th out of 16 teams, 13 shots behind the two automatic qualification spots.
As regional brings the end of the season for most of the team, we want to thank everyone for a great 2021 season. Asa and Matthew will continue to practice over the next week as they prepare for the state competition. And all team members are invited to compete in our "Beat the Coaches" event on Tuesday afternoon at Walnut Creek Golf Preserve.
We wanted to also send a special shout-out to Patrick Love who spent the season working with the Centaurus Booster Club to purchase (much needed) new golf bags for the team (and girls team) to use. The new bags look great and we can't wait for the full team to use them in 2022. Thank you Patrick and Centaurus Boost Club.

" I have missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I have lost almost 300 games. On 26 occasions I have been entrusted to take the game winning shot, and missed. And I have failed over and over and over again in my life. And this is precisely why I succeed" - Michael Jordan.
Last Monday we hosted our League tournament as well as an invitational scramble match. We had a total of 130 students participate: It was a success and all involved enjoyed the competition. On Tuesday our regional team played an invitational at Highland Hills GC in Greeley. Wednesday and Thursday we completed the last of our full team practices, and we finished the week with a regional team 18 hole practice round of golf at Flatirons GC.
We have set our regional team. It was a close competition that came to a head on our last tournament:
Matthew Vaver
Asa Wentworth

Jameson Love
Congratulations to student golfers representing our CHS at regionals - take a moment to wish them a good tournament.

This great game we love to play is hard on any day, add some pressure and then what? Don't deny it or try to get rid of it, instead accept it and learn to play with it. For most of us pressure feels like nerves and anxiousness, but in reality it is a little extra adrenaline that makes you feel this way -this puts you in an elevated mental and physical state, so use it to your advantage!
Move slow, swing slow, relax your grip and trust yourself!
Maintain an even pace, stick to your routine, plan your holes and trust the decisions you make!
Think your way around a course, simplify the game, pick big targets, trust your training!
Realize you are in the greatest park in the world and you are playing a game you love... if pressure sneaks in, accept it and embrace the challenge that comes with it -Chicken Nuggets (Thanks JL - best advice ever!)
We had a short week this week as Monday was a holiday. We will have a professional photographer during our League/Invite taking pictures of the team. We will also have a the CHS team taking pictures for the yearbook - so take a shower, tuck your shirt and look good for the camera :)
Our regional tournament is just around the corner - We will be playing Highland Hills golf course in Greeley on September 21st. As of now, we still dont know who will be representing us as there is a tight race for 3rd and 4th spots in the team - the decision will be made by the coaches by Wednesday September 15th. Good luck to all players :)
We have extra 2021 uniform hats, shirts and pullovers. For a small donation to the team, you can have one of your own -contact a coach for more information :)
While away from the golf course, practice closing your eyes, taking long slow deep breaths: Feel the air (not hearing it) as you breathe and feel your heart rate slow down. Then visualize standing on a tee box and seeing the landscape of a golf hole thinking how you would play it: visualize making the shots as you planned them - throw in a miss/recovery just for fun. See yourself walking down the fairway feeling relaxed concentration as you approach the next shot. Play one, nine or eighteen holes like this - with some practice you can do this without becoming distracted throughout the exercise - take 30 to 45 mins to do this :)
The team competed in the fourth league meet of the season at Twin Peaks GC in Longmont. After the disappointing finish at Highland Hills the week before, the team bounced back well. The team finished fourth, with Asa and Matthew finishing in the top 10 and Jeffery shooting his best competition score of the year for a 21st place finish.
The team then spent the rest of the week practicing at Indian Peaks in preparation for the final stretch of the season. With only two weeks left before the regional tournament after the Labor Day Holiday, the end game is definitely in sight now.

Focused Attention -> Less Interference -> More Awareness -> Relaxed Concentration
Player: "I was hitting the ball so well on our practice round, now I can't get it back!" Coach: "Maybe it is because yesterday it did not matter as much as today - today you are craving it, you want to swing well so you can win? - Moral of the story: This very subtle craving causes your mind to become unbalanced and you lose your concentration and feel - Enjoyment needs to be present in order to be able to play our best.
Practicing Relaxed Concentration: Let go of the results of your shots as you play and practice - keep a curious frame of mind and focus on one thing at a time. Go to the driving range and practice this then take it to the course. Practice focusing your mind and not reacting or worrying when the outcome of your shot is not what you expected Instead and without judgement: observe and maintain attention.
Pre Round Questions: What will you focus on for this round (pick one): Target, Tempo, Freedom, something else you are working on.
Post Round Questions: How did you concentrate (1-10)?, Where can you improve? What did you learn from this round?
Remember relaxed concentration is something you practice - it does not come naturally for everyone.
The team competed in its third conference tournament of the season Tuesday and was lead by Matthew Vaver’s 81. Overall the team however did not preform to its ability, finishing 7th as a team. Ultimately the result didn’t matter as much as the lessons learned at the course that will host our regional tournament in a matter of a few weeks.
At the half way point of the season it is a good time to reflect on your goals for the season and what you can do over the second half of the season to achieve them.
Next week we start of with conference tournament at Twin Peaks in Longmont for Varsity and another practice round at Flatirons for the Junior Varsity and Developmental teams. The rest of the week will be spent working on skills at Indian Peaks.

Playing in the moment, promotes relaxed concentration and does make you a better golfer.
You have many minds: intellectual, unconscious, ego and conscious mind
Thinking too much about your score takes you away from the moment and loss of equanimity
Walking consciously puts (or brings you back) to the moment - can you feel the air passing through our nostrils as you breathe, or your feet hitting the ground as you walk?
Staying in the moment is not an accident - it takes practice.
Your mind is a powerful tool, but it is not you and you should not allow it to control how want to play the game.
The team competed in the second NCAC tournament of the season at Colorado National hosted by Erie HS. As a team Centaurus placed 5th for the second tournament in a row. Congratulations to Will Kelly for tying his career low with a 6-over 78, good enough for a top finish (t-9). Tuesday the team played a practice round at Flatirons GC as we continue to prepare for playing regionals at the very similar layout of Highland Hills (not to mention prep for our conference tournament there). With the start of school, the team spent the rest of the week with more relaxed practices at Indian Peaks working on skills identified as areas to work on after Tuesday's round.
Next week we return for another practice round at Flatirons GC on Monday, followed by our league meet Tuesday at Highland Hills hosted by Greely West. This week marks the halfway point of the league season and is a good opportunity for us to improve on our past two finishes as we try to move up the conference standings and IWR (an important factor in seeding teams for regionals).

When you step into the first tee, do you have the right attitude so you can keep relaxed and concentrated to play your best golf?
Without the right attitude, you will not play to your potential.
Poor attitude causes the mind to become unbalanced and leads to loss of concentration
Equanimity: Learn to let go, Accept and take responsibility
Develop self trust and patience, commit to your intentions and accept what comes.
Expect less, get more: Loose your anger, frustration and expectations
After a round ask yourself:
How was your attitude, where can you improve it.
Did you keep your intentions and let go of your expectations?
Did you try too hard?
For our first 'Spartan Invitational' of the year, we played in Highland Hills in Greeley and the team came in on 6th place with a score of 250. Matthew shot a 79, Asa finished with an 81, Will Kelly landed a 90 and Jeffrey scored a 93. A good showing for our first match of the year.

The new public health order requires masks for all indoor situations in both athletics and activities – for student-athletes and spectators. The only exceptions are for student-athletes in spirit (during stunts), swimming and gymnastics.
Additionally, all wind and brass instruments will require bell covers.
During outdoor athletics and activities, a mask will not be required for student-athletes and spectators.
If taking the school bus to an event, you must wear a mask while on the school bus. Do NOT forget to bring a mask (it's just a good idea to keep one in your bag all season).
CHSAA is leaving sports up to local control, so if you travel to another school district/county with no mask restrictions, you do not have to wear masks there (e.g. Windsor). So, if Windsor comes here for volleyball = masks. If CHS travels to Windsor for volleyball = no masks.
Which myths are you attached to? What is stopping you from letting go of them?
I need to remember certain parts of my swing in order to swing well?
I lost something in my swing because I hit the ball poorly today.
You have to be really positive about everything in order to play well?
I had a bad day today, therefore I'll have a bad day tomorrow.
I'll will miss a shot at a vital time?
After two days of tryouts the team is excited to welcome four returning players and five new players to the team. Returning letter winners Asa, Matthew and Will K, will lead the varsity team into the first week of competition alongside returning senior Jeffery. The Summer Golf League is intended to get students involved, meet each other and better prepare for the upcoming CHS Golf Season. We will play JGAC courses starting mid summer.
If you are a proficient player (score in the 90's or less) you'll play stroke or match play rounds.
If you have played and are still learning the game (scores 100-125) you'll play a scramble with other players of similar skill.
If you have never played, or can hit the ball 150+ yards consistently, or feel you are not ready for this competitive golf league, I recommend you use the JGAC Plass to find golf camps, private lessons, practice and play so you can improve your skills and join us later in the summer.

"I just finished a book that I think you might find instructive for the kids an us. It’s “The Pro, Lessons about Golf and Life from my father, Claude Harmon, Sr.” by Butch Harmon. Besides some fun stories he has a number of things he’s learned about the game and life. He also discusses his instruction of Tiger which is fun." - Coach Bill.
